Cold Plunge Water Volume Calculator
Calculate the estimated water volume of a round, oval or rectangular ice bath from its internal dimensions and planned fill depth.
Internal water dimensions and actual fill depth normally provide a more useful working-volume estimate than overall external tub dimensions.
Start with the waterline, not the outside size.
Internal water dimensions and actual fill depth give the most useful early estimate. External dimensions can still be calculated, but should be treated as a rough gross volume.
— litres
Three inputs matter more than a nominal tub size.
Use the usable water space where possible. Outside dimensions include the inflatable wall structure and can overstate water capacity.
Wall height is not automatically water depth. Calculate from the planned operating waterline rather than filling the geometry to the top edge.
This calculator does not subtract a generic human displacement value. Displacement changes with body size and immersion depth, so the result remains a geometric baseline. Confirm final working volume from the approved tub specification or physical sample when exact system data is required.
One waterline. Three formulas.
Dimensions are converted to metres before calculating cubic metres, litres and gallons.
Best for circular ice bath tubs using the internal water diameter.
Treats the internal footprint as an ellipse.
Suitable for straight-sided rectangular water footprints.
The number is useful because of what comes next.
Water volume is one project input—not a complete chiller specification.
Choose the tub.
Start with the shape, usable interior and installation footprint that fit the intended cold plunge program.
Compare inflatable ice bath tubs →Use volume as a chiller input.
Chiller selection also depends on target temperature, ambient conditions, operating pattern and the exact equipment specification. Water volume should therefore move into the chiller review—not replace it.
Review cold plunge chiller sizing →Match the complete system.
Ports, hose dimensions, fittings, circulation layout, electrical requirements and filtration still need to match the selected tub and chiller.
Check chiller fitting compatibility →One calculation. The next decision stays separate.
Cold Plunge Volume Questions
How do I calculate the water volume of a round ice bath?
Use the internal water diameter and actual fill depth. The formula is π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × fill depth. When dimensions are converted to metres, the result is cubic metres; multiply by 1,000 for litres.
Should I use external or internal dimensions for an ice bath volume calculation?
Internal water dimensions normally provide the more useful estimate because inflatable walls occupy part of the overall footprint. External dimensions can be used for a rough gross calculation when internal measurements are not yet available.
Does the calculator subtract the user's body displacement?
No. Body displacement changes with the user's size and immersion depth, so this calculator keeps the result as a geometric water-volume baseline. Confirm the final operating volume from the approved tub specification or physical sample where exact capacity matters.
Can water volume alone determine which cold plunge chiller I need?
No. Water volume is one sizing input. Target water temperature, ambient conditions, operating pattern and the actual chiller specification also need to be reviewed before the cooling system is confirmed.
